Weather Storm Roofing & Guttering
New Roofs & Re-roofing in Southend, Rayleigh & Essex
Fast response, free quotes and trusted local repair specialists.
07928 888913A full re-roof is a serious investment — done properly it should last 40–60+ years. We carry out complete new roof installations and re-roofs across Southend, Rayleigh, Benfleet and the wider Essex area using high-quality concrete, clay and natural slate systems.
We only recommend a full re-roof when repair genuinely no longer makes sense — for example when battens are rotten, felt has perished across the whole roof, or tiles are failing en masse. Where a partial re-roof or targeted repair will do the job, that's what we'll quote for.
Every re-roof includes proper stripping, new breathable membrane, new treated battens, new tiles or slates, ridge and hip bedding, lead flashing where needed, and full skip hire and waste removal. Scaffolding is arranged as part of the job.
Quick Answers
How long does a roof replacement take?
A standard three-bedroom semi in Southend or Rayleigh takes three to five working days once the scaffold is up. Larger detached properties and natural slate roofs run to seven to ten days. Weather can add a day or two, and we always sheet the roof overnight.
How much does a new roof cost in Essex?
As a guide, a terraced house re-roof usually falls between £5,500 and £8,000, a three-bed semi between £7,000 and £11,000, and a detached property from £11,000 upwards. That includes strip-out, membrane, battens, tiles, ridge work, scaffold and waste removal.
How do I know if I need a new roof?
The clearest signs are tiles slipping repeatedly after ordinary weather, felt that tears or crumbles when touched, sagging between the rafters, and damp appearing in more than one place. If two or more apply, a re-roof is usually cheaper over ten years than repeated repairs.
Do I need planning permission or building control?
Like-for-like re-roofing normally falls under permitted development, but building control notification is required — we handle that. Changing tile type or weight, or working on a listed building or conservation area property, may need approval and we'll flag it at quote stage.

Tiled Roofs
Concrete interlocking and clay plain tiles are the most common choice across Essex — long-lasting, cost-effective and available in a wide range of profiles and colours to match neighbouring properties.
Slate Roofs
Natural and fibre-cement slate roofs offer 60+ year lifespans and suit period and higher-end properties across Leigh-on-Sea, Westcliff and central Southend.
Partial Re-roofs
Sometimes only one slope, one side or the rear extension needs stripping and re-covering. We'll always quote for the smallest job that fixes the problem properly.
Insulation & Ventilation
A re-roof is the ideal time to upgrade loft insulation and add roof ventilation. Ask about combined pricing when we quote.
Roof Repair or Full Re-Roof — Which Do You Actually Need?
Most homeowners asking about a new roof are really asking whether repair will do. This is how we judge it on site, and what each route means in practice.
| Repair | Full re-roof | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | £150–£900 | £6,000–£14,000 depending on size and covering |
| Added lifespan | 2–10 years, depending on the age of the covering | 40–100 years with a new covering, battens and membrane |
| Time on site | Same day to 1 day | 3–10 days including scaffold |
| Scaffold needed | Usually not — ladder or tower access | Yes, in almost all cases |
| Right choice when | Isolated slipped tiles, one leak, sound battens, covering under ~40 years old | Widespread nail fatigue, sagging, failed battens or felt, repeated leaks in different places |
| Guarantee | 12 months on the repair | 10-year workmanship guarantee |
Materials We Use
- Concrete interlocking tiles
- Redland, Marley and Sandtoft profiles — the most cost-effective choice and the standard covering on most post-war Essex housing. Expected life 40–60 years.
- Clay plain tiles and pantiles
- Used on period and conservation properties across Leigh, Westcliff and Old Southend where the original character needs preserving. More expensive but exceptionally long-lived.
- Natural and fibre cement slate
- Spanish and Welsh natural slate for premium re-roofs, or fibre cement slate as a lighter, lower-cost alternative that keeps the same look.
- Breathable membrane and treated battens
- BS 5534 compliant breathable underlay over graded, treated battens — the two components that decide whether a roof lasts 20 years or 60.
- Dry-fix ridge and hip systems
- Mechanically fixed ridge and hip rather than mortar alone, meeting current British Standard and removing the main cause of ridge tiles coming loose in Essex coastal winds.
How Long Does It Take?

- Terraced house re-roof3–4 days
- Three-bed semi re-roof4–5 days
