Insurance Claims for Storm-Damaged Roofs — What You Need

Step-by-step on how to claim, what evidence you need, and the mistakes that get claims rejected.

Most home insurance covers storm damage to roofs, but claims get rejected more often than they should because homeowners don't gather the right evidence or word things wrong on the phone. Here's how to do it properly.

What counts as 'storm damage'?

Insurers typically define a storm as wind gusts over 55mph, rainfall of more than 25mm in an hour, or hail/snow of similar intensity. The Met Office archive will tell you exactly what hit your postcode on which date — your claim will reference this.

Step 1 — Photograph everything before touching anything

  • The roof from the ground (multiple angles)
  • Any tiles, slates or debris on the ground
  • Interior water damage, stained ceilings, damp patches
  • Wider shots showing the property in context
  • Time and date the photos via your phone's metadata

Step 2 — Get a roofer's written report

Insurers want a professional assessment — not just a quote. Ask the roofer for a report that specifies: cause (storm-related), date of damage, scope of works needed, and itemised cost. We provide insurance reports as standard.

Step 3 — Make the claim correctly

Call your insurer within 14 days of the damage. Use the phrase 'storm damage' and reference the date. Don't volunteer that the roof was 'getting on a bit' or 'overdue a replacement' — insurers use phrases like that to argue the damage was caused by wear and tear (which isn't covered), not the storm.

Step 4 — Make-safe before the loss adjuster visits

You have a duty to prevent further damage. A temporary tarp is acceptable and the cost is usually reimbursed. Keep the receipt.

Common rejection reasons

  • No proof a storm occurred (Met Office data missing)
  • Damage described as gradual or pre-existing
  • Repairs started before the loss adjuster's visit
  • Roof flagged as not maintained (uncleaned gutters, mossy)
  • Late notification (over 14 days)
