The problem
The pointing was defective, the existing lead was split and aged, and the chimney-top flaunching had deteriorated.
Work completed
This Canvey Island chimney overhaul combined repointing, new lead work and renewal of the top flaunching. Flaunching is the shaped mortar around the chimney pots. The pointing was defective, the existing lead was split and aged, and the chimney-top flaunching had deteriorated. We ground out the defective pointing, then cleaned and prepared the masonry before repointing it with appropriate mortar. The existing lead was removed, and new Code 4 lead flashing was fitted on all sides of the chimney, together with a new lead apron. Deteriorated flaunching was removed back to a sound base and new flaunching was formed for runoff — bringing together repointed masonry, new lead flashing and apron, and renewed chimney-top flaunching.
